What is a Dental Filling?
Fillings are helpful for restoring a tooth that is decayed. Cavities can happen for a variety of reasons. The result is a decayed portion of tooth that can become problematic to your oral health. To prevent the decay from getting worse, it is removed and a tooth-colored filling put into its place.
Why is a Dental Filling needed?
A dental filling is typically needed if you have a cavity. Over time, a small cavity can become much larger to the point of infiltrating the inner pulp. Once this occurs, a root canal is necessary to restore the tooth. Before the decay gets this bad, it is removed so that a filling can be placed.
Who is a candidate for a Dental Filling?
Most patients who need a filling can safely have the procedure done. We can determine if you have a cavity with a simple examination. If you have a cavity, it is important to seek treatment before the decay can get worse. Fillings can last for many years without needing to be replaced.
What happens during the Dental Filling process?
The dental filling procedure involves removing the decay from the tooth. Before this occurs, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the area. The decay is removed using a slow speed drill. The hole is prepped for the new filling. Composite resin tooth-colored filling material is then placed inside of the tooth. The excess material is removed and we will cure it with a bright light. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour in our office. We can even place multiple fillings at the same appointment if they are within the same area. You will be ready to leave the office in no time and have a beautiful restoration that is going to last for a long period of time. Fillings are one of the most common dental restorations placed worldwide.
